Coming
from different backgrounds and countries Angélica Castelló, Maja
Osojnik, Matija Schellander, Thomas Grill und Mathias Koch formed the
Low Frequency Orchestra in Vienna in 2003 (with Herwig Neugebauer
joining them in 2004) to explore the sonic possibilities of the
combination of low recorders, low strings, drums and live electronics.
The goal is to develop an original way of playing, using both
traditional and extended playing techniques, the verve of improvisation
and the precision of notated music.
Under the titles "Déjà Vu" and "CUT" the band
performs improvisations based on more or less rigid structures and
graphical scores. The pieces range from terse statements and
fast-evolving stories to static landscapes.
The Vienna-based composers Katharina Klement, Jorge Sánchez-Chiong,
Robert Kellner, Veronika Simor and Maja Osojnik composed pieces for the Low Frequency
Orchestra. The pieces combine composed and improvised parts and use both
graphical and traditional notation.
The Low Frequency Orchestra also performed a portrait of "super-counter"
Tom Johnson, consisting of arrangements of his pieces and
interpretations of his graphic scores.
They
work aswell together with visual artists as for example with Martin
Pichlmayr, with whom they interpreted a series of color scores by Robert Lettnerunder
under the supervision of Thomas Grill in 2006. The Project is called Das Spiel vom Kommen und Gehen

The members of the Low Frequency Orchestra have studied in renowned
schools in Vienna, Amsterdam, Mexico City and Montreal. They are active
in Jazz, early and contemporary music and have performed as soloists or
members of various ensembles all over Europe, Canada and Mexico.
